The name is still to be decided.

Tau Zero Racing, or “GPO 2” among friends, is a top-down multiplayer racing game inspired by classic arcade racers.

You can try the alpha version right now: https://gpo2.tauzerogames.com

Multiplayer, always!

The main goal is to compete against other players, battling it out on the track, pulling off some good old-fashioned bumping, and climbing the leaderboards in the monthly championship and overall ranking.

And when the server is empty, a series of time-based events still lets you have fun by putting in a few solo laps.

The physics

The cars are designed to be easy to control with a keyboard and quick to pick up and play.

Beneath that simplicity lies a more sophisticated physics system: weight distribution, traction, tyres, downforce, and other characteristics that are currently kept largely under the hood by the arcade-style handling.

As development progresses, these elements will gradually come to the forefront, adding more depth to the driving experience without sacrificing its pick-up-and-play feel.

The project

For nostalgia’s sake — and because they were already ready to go — I started with the tracks from the old GPO game. That’s where the working title GPO 2 comes from.

The tracks are fairly low-resolution, but this is just the starting point!

As development continues, new tracks and cars will be added, along with further evolution of the physics and gameplay mechanics.
